It takes place in Louisville, Kentucky. The race happens at a track called Churchill Downs. Three-year-old horses run the race. It lasts about two minutes. People call it "The Run for the Roses." This is because the winning horse wears a blanket of roses.

The first Derby was held in 1875.

A horse named Aristides won that first race. A Black jockey named Oliver Lewis rode him. In the early years, Black jockeys were very important. They won many races. However, things changed after 1894. White jockeys began to use force to push Black jockeys away. Because of this, Black jockeys began to disappear from the race. Jimmy Winkfield was the last Black jockey to win. He won in 1902.

The Derby is part of the Triple Crown. This is a set of three big races. The other two are the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
