The winner is very special. A blanket made of roses is placed on the winning horse. This is why many people call the race "The Run for the Roses."

To run the race, horses travel a specific distance. The race is exactly one and a quarter miles long.

This distance is also known as ten furlongs. The horses start at a gate to begin the race. In 2020, the track used a new single gate with 20 stalls. This helped prevent crowding that happened with older gate setups. The race is the first part of a famous group of three races. This group is called the Triple Crown. It includes the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.

The history of the Derby began a long time ago. In 1872, Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. visited racing sites in England and France. He wanted to bring great racing to his home in Kentucky. The very first Derby was held on May 17, 1875. There were 15 horses in that first race. A horse named Aristides won the very first event. He was ridden by a Black jockey named Oliver Lewis. Clark helped build the facilities that became Churchill Downs. The track officially took that name in 1937.

Many important people have been part of the Derby's history. Black jockeys were very successful in the early years. Jimmy Winkfield was the last Black jockey to win in 1902. Later, the race became a huge event for many viewers. The first live radio broadcast happened in 1925. The first national television broadcast was in 1952. In 1973, a famous horse named Secretariat set a record. He ran the race in just 1:59.4 minutes. This remains the fastest time ever recorded for the Derby.

Today, the Kentucky Derby is a massive event for many people.
