He is often called the god of war. Many different names are used to describe him. Some people call him Skanda, Subrahmanya, or Muruga. He is the son of the deities Shiva and Parvati. He is also the brother of Ganesha.

He also carries a special spear called a vel. His mother, Parvati, is said to have given him this spear. Some statues show him with six heads. This comes from stories about how he was born. These stories say he was once six separate baby boys. Eventually, they were fused together into one person.

There are many different legends about how Kartikeya was born. One story from the Skanda Purana says six divine sparks came from Shiva. These sparks were carried by the wind god, Vayu. The fire god, Agni, then took them to the Ganges river. The sparks grew into six boys in a lake called Saravana. These boys were raised by women known as the Krittikas. Because of this, his name Kartikeya means "of the Krittikas" in Sanskrit.

Kartikeya was born to help the devas, or gods. They were facing hard times because of the asuras. The asuras were powerful beings who were acting like tyrants. One asura named Tarakasura could only be killed by a son of Shiva. Kartikeya became a great commander to lead the divine army. He was given 30,000 warriors to help him in the fight. He also had nine special sub-commanders to assist him. He used his vel to defeat the asura brothers.

Today, people all over the world honor Kartikeya. He is very popular in South India and Sri Lanka. Many people in Southeast Asia also worship him. This includes people in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia. You can find followers in many other places too. These include Canada, the United States, Australia, and South Africa. He is even honored in Caribbean countries like Trinidad and Tobago.
