Many people call him by different names. In the south, people often call him Muruga. He is seen as the patron of the Tamil language. Some stories say he has six heads. This is because he was once six baby boys. These boys were joined into one person.

Kartikeya is often shown as a young man. He rides a peacock named Paravani. He carries a spear called a vel. His mother, Parvati, gave him this spear. He was born to help the devas, or gods. He fought against the asuras to bring peace. One asura, Surapadma, turned into a mango tree. Kartikeya split the tree with his vel. Half of the tree became a peacock. The other half became a rooster.
