He is a protector who can travel anywhere very quickly. He is also a famous enemy of the Nagas, who are serpent-like beings.

In Hindu stories, Garuda is the mount for the god Vishnu. This means Vishnu rides on him.

Garuda is said to be the son of a sage named Kashyapa and a woman named Vinata. He has a brother named Aruna, who drives the chariot for the sun god, Surya. One legend says Garuda fought a great war against the gods. He did this to get a special nectar called Amrita to free his mother. After his great feats, he agreed to serve as Vishnu's vehicle.

Artists have many ways of showing Garuda in statues and paintings.

Sometimes he is shown with golden-yellow wings and an emerald-colored body. He might have two or four hands. If he is carrying Vishnu, his hands help support the god's feet. Other times, he might hold a jar of immortality nectar or an umbrella. Some old carvings, like those in the Badami cave temples, show his image from the 6th century.

Garuda is more than just a character in old stories. He is a symbol used by real countries today.

His flapping wings are even said to be powerful enough to affect the earth and heaven. Whether as a bird or a man with wings, Garuda remains a famous figure of wonder.
