Many people see him as a powerful hero. He is often linked to the idea of order in the world. Because of this, he is a very important part of many religious stories.

One of the most famous stories describes how Indra saves mankind. An evil being named Vritra once blocked the waters. This prevented rain and sunshine from reaching the world.

To fix this, Indra used a special weapon called a vajra. The vajra is a thunderbolt. He used this power to defeat Vritra and release the waters. This act brought prosperity and happiness back to the people.

Indra has a very long and complex history. He is the most mentioned deity in the Rigveda. This is an ancient Hindu scripture from a long time ago.

Some scholars believe his name might mean "spirit" or "strong." Others think it relates to his ability to bring light. His roots may go back to the Bactria–Margiana Archaeological Complex. In some very old texts, he was even seen as a giant demon.

Artists show Indra in many different ways. He is often seen riding a large white elephant named Airavata.
