Joseph Kony is a man from Uganda who became a famous warlord. He was born in September 1961 in a village called Odek. His father was a farmer and a worker for the Catholic Church. His mother was also a farmer. Kony was part of the Acholi people. As a young boy, he worked as an altar boy. He left school when he was 15 years old. Later, he started a group called the Lord's Resistance Army, or the LRA.

Kony led his group for many decades. He said he was a spirit medium. This means he believed he could talk to spirits. He claimed to have 13 different spirits helping him. Some spirits had jobs like a commander or an officer. He said these spirits gave him advice. Kony wanted to build a country based on the Ten Commandments. He used religious ideas to lead his followers. He even told his soldiers that oil on their chests would protect them from bullets.

His group caused a lot of trouble in Africa. The LRA fought against the government of Uganda for a long time. During these fights, many people were hurt or lost their homes. Between 1986 and 2009, about 2 million people had to leave their villages. The LRA also took children away from their families. They made about 66,000 children become soldiers. Many people were treated very unfairly during this time. The group was once very large with 3,000 soldiers.

Because of these actions, many countries called the LRA a terrorist group. The United Nations and the United States both named them as such. In 2005, a court called the International Criminal Court, or ICC, charged Kony with crimes. They said he committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. The ICC is a special court in a place called The Hague. Since 2006, an Interpol Red Notice has been out for him. This is a way for police to look for a person globally. Kony has stayed hidden and has not been caught.

Today, the LRA is much smaller than it used to be. By 2017, the group had shrunk to only about 100 soldiers. The United States and Uganda stopped their big hunts for him. They believed the LRA was no longer a huge danger to Uganda. The LRA does not fight in Uganda anymore. Some people think they are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or South Sudan. As of 2022, reports say Kony might be hiding in Darfur. He is still a very famous and wanted man.
