Hugo Boss was a German businessman.

He was born in 1885 in Metzingen. His parents were Luise and Heinrich Boss. Hugo was the youngest of five children. He learned how to be a merchant through an apprenticeship. He also served in the military from 1903 to 1905. Later, he worked in a weaving mill in Konstanz. In 1908, he took over his parents' lingerie shop. He even served as a corporal during World War I.

In 1923, Boss started his own clothing company. He opened a factory in 1924 with two partners. At first, the company made shirts and jackets. They also made work clothes, sportswear, and raincoats.

The business grew larger over time. It eventually became a famous fashion house. This company is known for making clothes for many different people. It was a very busy business in Germany.

In 1931, Boss joined the Nazi Party. This was two years before Adolf Hitler gained power. The company began making uniforms for many groups. They made brown shirts for the SA. They also made black uniforms for the SS.

The company also made clothes for the Hitler Youth. They also provided uniforms for the postal service and the railroad. They even made clothes for the Wehrmacht, which was the German military.

During the war, the company used forced labour.

This means people were made to work against their will. Some workers were prisoners of war from France and Poland. Specifically, the company used 140 Polish workers and 40 French workers. These people were taken from occupied territories. In 1999, lawyers for Holocaust survivors started legal cases about this. In 2011, the company issued an apology for using these workers.

After World War II, leaders checked the actions of people in Germany. This was called the denazification process. At first, Boss was called a supporter of the Nazi Party. He had to pay a heavy fine. He also lost his right to vote. He was not allowed to run a business. Later, his label changed to a "fellow traveller." This meant he had a less severe punishment. His son-in-law, Eugen Holy, took over the company. Boss died in 1948 at age 63 from a tooth abscess.
