He is best known for founding the sportswear company Adidas. Adi was a cobbler, which is a person who makes and repairs shoes. He wanted to create special shoes for different sports. He spent much of his life looking for better ways to make footwear. His work helped change how athletes perform on the field and track.

This passion for design made his company a worldwide success.

Adi used many clever ways to make his shoes work well. He experimented with different materials like shark skin and kangaroo leather. These materials helped make the shoes strong but very light. He also created some of the first spiked shoes for runners. To make these, he worked with a friend's family who owned a smithy. A smithy is a place where metal is shaped by heat. He even used a stationary bicycle to power a machine for making leather. This helped him produce shoes even when he did not have electricity.

In the beginning, Adi worked with his brother, Rudolf Dassler. They started the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in Herzogenaurach. Rudolf joined the business in 1924. They worked together for many years in a small workshop. However, the brothers had a big feud after World War II. This disagreement caused them to go their separate ways in 1948. Rudolf went on to start his own company called Puma. Adi continued to build Adidas into a massive global brand.

Many famous moments helped the Dassler name become known. At the 1928 Amsterdam Games, runner Lina Radke wore Dassler shoes. In 1936, the American athlete Jesse Owens wore them in Berlin.

Jesse Owens won gold medals in the long jump and other events. This success helped the company become an international competitor. By the time Adi died in 1978, Adidas was very large. It had 17 factories and sold one billion Deutschmarks worth of shoes every year.

Adi's story shows how one person's hobby can change an industry. He treated shoe making like a science rather than just a job. His focus on specialized designs helped athletes all over the world. Today, many people recognize the Adidas logo on their own sports gear.
