It was written by Philip Pullman. The story follows two children named Lyra and Will. They travel through many parallel worlds. This is called a multiverse.

In these books, Lyra meets many strange things. She meets witches and armored polar bears. She also uses a special tool called an alethiometer. This device tells the truth.

The series is a fantasy. It also talks about big ideas in science and religion. Pullman used ideas from a poem called Paradise Lost. He used the name for the series from that poem too.

The books are very popular. More than 22 million copies have been sold. They have been put into 40 different languages. Many people have seen the story on TV or in movies.
