The series was written by Philip Pullman. It includes the books Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. The story follows two children named Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry. They have also been translated into 40 languages.

In this story, the characters encounter many magical things. Lyra meets flying witches and armored polar bears. She also uses a special tool called an alethiometer. This is a device that tells the truth. The books also talk about big ideas from science and religion. The series uses ideas from a poem by John Milton. That poem is called Paradise Lost. Pullman even took the name of his series from that poem.

He chose the name because it reminded him of dark matter in science.

Pullman wrote the books with many different ideas in mind. The story moves between many different worlds. In the first book, the world looks a bit like the UK in the Edwardian era. There are no cars or airplanes there. Instead, people use large zeppelins to travel. The religious leaders in Lyra's world are called the Magisterium. This group has a lot of power over how people live. In this world, the center of religious power is in Geneva, Switzerland. This is different from the real world where the center is in Rome.

Many people have brought these stories to life on screen.

BBC Radio 4 made a radio version in 2003. The Royal National Theatre also performed the story in London. A movie called The Golden Compass came out in 2007. Later, a television series was made by Bad Wolf. This show was shown on the BBC and HBO between 2019 and 2023. These different versions help more people learn about Lyra and Will.

Philip Pullman has continued to write in this same universe. He wrote four short works after the main trilogy. These include Lyra's Oxford and Once Upon a Time in the North. He also started a new trilogy called The Book of Dust. The first book in that set is La Belle Sauvage. The second book is The Secret Commonwealth. The final book, The Rose Field, was published in October 2025. These stories keep the magic of the original books alive for readers.
