His Dark Materials is a celebrated trilogy of fantasy novels written by Philip Pullman.

The series consists of Northern Lights, published in 1995, followed by The Subtle Knife in 1997, and The Amber Spyglass in 2000. In North America, the first book was released under the title The Golden Compass. The narrative follows the coming-of-age journey of two protagonists, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry. As they grow, they travel through a multiverse, which is a collection of many parallel universes. The books explore complex themes by blending fantasy elements with physics, philosophy, and theology.

The mechanism of the story relies on the interaction between characters and their unique environments. In Lyra's world, humans possess dæmons, which are physical manifestations of their souls. A central conflict involves the Magisterium, a powerful religious authority that exerts absolute control over society. The Magisterium attempts a procedure called intercision, which is the forced severing of the bond between a human and their dæmon. This process is intended to prevent the onset of adult emotions. Additionally, the plot utilizes the alethiometer, a truth-telling device that Lyra uses to navigate her journey.

The trilogy features several distinct worlds and magical entities. The first novel takes place in a world resembling the Edwardian era of the United Kingdom. In this setting, technology includes zeppelins instead of cars or fixed-wing aircraft. The second book introduces the city of Cittàgazze, where residents use technology to move between worlds. This reckless use of travel creates Spectres, which are entities that destroy adult souls but cannot harm children. The third book introduces the Land of the Dead and a world populated by sentient creatures called Mulefa. These different stages of travel create a complex web of cause and effect across the multiverse.

Pullman drew significant inspiration from the 17th-century epic poem Paradise Lost by John Milton.

The title of the series is taken directly from a phrase in Book 2 of Milton's work. Pullman chose this phrase because it echoed the concept of dark matter in astrophysics. The series also serves as an inversion of Milton's poem. While Milton viewed original sin as a tragic failing, Pullman uses his narrative to commend humanity for it. This connection to classical literature adds a layer of philosophical depth to the fantasy adventure.

The commercial and critical success of the trilogy is substantial. By 2024, more than 22 million copies of the novels had been sold across 50 different countries. The text has been translated into 40 different languages to reach a global audience. The series has won several prestigious awards, including the Carnegie Medal in 1995 and the Whitbread Book of the Year in 2001. In a 2003 poll by the BBC, the trilogy was ranked third in The Big Read. These figures demonstrate the massive cultural impact of Pullman's storytelling.

Many adaptations have brought these stories to various media formats.

In 2003, BBC Radio 4 and RTÉ produced full-cast radio dramatizations. The London Royal National Theatre staged a two-part adaptation between 2003 and 2004. A film version of the first book was released by New Line Cinema in 2007. More recently, a television series produced by Bad Wolf aired on the BBC and HBO from 2019 to 2023. These versions allow the complex themes and characters to reach diverse audiences through different sensory experiences.

Pullman has expanded this universe through several subsequent works. He wrote four short stories set in the Northern Lights universe, including Lyra's Oxford and Serpentine. He also began a new trilogy titled The Book of Dust, starting with La Belle Sauvage in 2017. The second book, The Secret Commonwealth, followed in 2019. The final volume, The Rose Field, was published on October 23, 2025. These works continue to explore the intricate connections between the characters and the vast, interconnected worlds they inhabit.
