His creative work spans across several mediums, including short fiction, novels, comic books, and screenplays. He also writes for audio theatre, which uses sound to tell stories. Gaiman is particularly famous for his comic series, *The Sandman*, which ran from 1989 to 1996. He has also written highly successful novels such as *Good Omens*, *Stardust*, *American Gods*, and *Coraline*. Beyond books, he has co-created television adaptations for both *The Sandman* and *Good Omens*.

To understand how Gaiman became an author, one must look at his early relationship with reading. He was able to read by the age of four and found great pleasure in books. When he was ten, he read the works of Dennis Wheatley, which left a strong impression on him. He also spent significant time reading J.R.R. Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings* from his school library. After winning school prizes for English and reading, he was finally able to buy the third volume of the series. These early experiences helped build the foundation for his future career in professional writing.

Gaiman's writing style was heavily influenced by specific authors and literary techniques. For example, reading C.S. Lewis's *The Chronicles of Narnia* taught him about the power of using parenthetical statements. These are remarks placed in brackets to speak directly to the reader. He also deeply admired Lewis Carroll's *Alice's Adventures in Wonderland*, eventually learning the text by heart. Other writers who shaped his mind include Roger Zelazny, Samuel R. Delany, and Angela Carter. Even the visual style of the French magazine *Métal Hurlant* fascinated him during a trip to France at age thirteen.

Throughout his career, Gaiman has received numerous prestigious literary honors. He has won the Hugo, Nebula, and Bram Stoker awards, which recognize excellence in science fiction and fantasy. He also achieved a rare milestone with *The Graveyard Book*. He became the first author to win both the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal for the same work. In addition to these, his novel *The Ocean at the End of the Lane* was voted Book of the Year in the British National Book Awards. This book was later adapted into a successful stage play at the Royal National Theatre in London.

In the early 1980s, Gaiman began his professional journey through journalism. He conducted interviews and wrote book reviews to learn more about the world. He wrote extensively for the British Fantasy Society to build connections in the publishing industry. His first professional short story, titled "Featherquest," was published in *Imagine* magazine in May 1984. Shortly after, he began writing a biography of the band Duran Duran. His interest in comics also grew significantly after reading Alan Moore's *Swamp Thing* while waiting for a train in 1984.

Gaiman has used modern technology to maintain a unique connection with his readers. In 2001, his publishers created a website for his novel *American Gods*. This site included a weblog where he described the daily process of revising and promoting his work. This evolved into his official website, where he continues to post about his writing projects. He uses this platform to answer reader emails and interact directly with his fans. He has even used Twitter since 2008, earning recognition as one of "The Best Tweeters in Comics" by IGN.

Beyond his writing, Gaiman has been involved in various forms of social advocacy. He appeared in a United Nations video titled "What They Took With Them" to raise awareness for global refugees. He has also supported the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, serving on its advisory board. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he used his platform to support Ukrainian refugees and refused to renew contracts with Russian publishers. He also signed an open letter calling for the release of the Russian prisoner Alexei Navalny.

In 2024, Gaiman's career faced significant challenges due to serious legal and social issues. Numerous women came forward with accusations of sexual assault against him. One accuser filed a lawsuit against Gaiman and his former wife, Amanda Palmer, alleging rape and human trafficking. Gaiman has denied these allegations. These reports have resulted in the halting or affected production of several adaptations of his literary works.
