Their creative work is widely recognized for its nonlinear narratives and humanist philosophy. A nonlinear narrative is a story that does not follow a straight chronological path. They also incorporate countercultural leanings into their storytelling. This means their work often explores ideas outside of mainstream social norms. Morrison has made a massive impact on the modern comic book industry through various publishers. Their writing helps readers explore complex ideas about humanity and society.

Creating a comic book is a collaborative process involving specific technical steps. First, the writer develops the script and the dialogue. Next, an artist illustrates the scenes to match the written words. Morrison often uses experimental methods to change how a story is felt. For example, they once used a Ouija board to help tell a story. They also utilized cut-up techniques and collage instead of traditional comic panels. These methods allow the creator to convey specific moods or psychological states.

Morrison's career includes several distinct stages and types of work. They have written for major American publishers like DC Comics and Marvel. At DC, they worked on famous characters like Batman and Superman. They also created original works for the Vertigo imprint, which is a label for more mature stories. One famous creator-owned series is The Invisibles, which consists of three volumes. Morrison also worked at Marvel, where they wrote for the New X-Men series. They even served as the editor-in-chief of Heavy Metal magazine from 2016 to 2018.

Morrison's journey began in Glasgow, Scotland, where they were born in 1960. They attended Allan Glen's School during their youth. Interestingly, a careers guidance teacher once rejected their art portfolio. The teacher suggested they pursue a job in a bank instead. However, Morrison began publishing work in 1978 at age 17. Their first published strips were titled Gideon Stargrave for Near Myths. This was one of the first alternative comics in Britain. They also wrote Captain Clyde for The Govan Press, a local newspaper.

During the 1980s, Morrison's professional reputation grew significantly. They spent time touring and recording with a band called The Mixers. In 1987, they created the character Zenith for the publication 2000 AD. This success led to an invitation to work for DC Comics. Morrison became part of the "British Invasion" of American comics. This group included other famous writers like Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore. One of their major early successes was the graphic novel Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. This 128-page book was painted by artist Dave McKean. It was a massive commercial success, selling 182,166 hardcover copies and 85,047 paperback copies.

In the 1990s, Morrison achieved even greater fame through several major projects. They revamped the Justice League of America into the JLA series. This run lasted for 125 issues and became a best-seller. They also wrote the DC One Million crossover event, which explored the 853rd century. Another major work was the three-volume series The Invisibles. This series combined political and pop-cultural references. Some critics have even noted similarities between The Invisibles and the 1999 film The Matrix. Morrison also co-created the character Damian Wayne for the Batman series.

Morrison's influence extends into many different fields of art and culture. Their work has received many prestigious honors and awards. They have won Eisner, Harvey, and Inkpot awards for their writing. In 2012, they were appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This honor was granted by the British government for services to film and literature. Beyond comics, Morrison has also written scripts for plays staged at the Edinburgh Fringe. Their work continues to be a subject of study for how stories can change our perception of reality.
