Richard Kylea Cowie Jr., known professionally as Wiley, is a highly influential British musician. He is widely recognized as the "Godfather of Grime," a genre of electronic music characterized by fast, heavy rhythms. Born in Bow, East London, on 19 January 1979, Wiley played a central role in shaping this new sound. His work as both a producer and an MC, or master of ceremonies, helped establish the foundations of the grime scene.

Wiley's musical journey began with his father, a reggae artist. His father introduced him to the drums and early hip-hop music, such as the work of The Sugarhill Gang. As a teenager, Wiley moved through different parts of London and Kent. He eventually turned to music production as an alternative way to earn money. He started as a DJ before transitioning into rapping. He utilized pirate radio stations, such as Rinse FM, to broadcast his early productions to the public.

One of Wiley's most significant contributions was the creation of eskibeat. This was a specific style of instrumental music he produced in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He released these tracks on white label vinyl, which are records released without formal labels. Notable examples include "Eskimo," "Avalanche," and "Snowman." He often used these cold, winter-themed names because he felt "cold-hearted" during that period of his life. This style helped define the early grime aesthetic.

Wiley's career involved several different musical groups and collectives. In the early 2000s, he was a member of the UK garage crew Pay As U Go. This group achieved a Top 40 hit with the song "Champagne Dance" in 2001. Later, he formed the Roll Deep entourage, which included other notable artists like Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder. Through these groups, Wiley helped transition the sound from traditional UK garage toward the more aggressive grime style. He also released music under various aliases, including DJ Wildchild and Wiley Kat.

As his career progressed, Wiley moved between underground success and mainstream popularity. In 2004, he released his debut album, *Treddin' on Thin Ice*. During this era, his use of the Korg Triton synthesizer became a staple of the grime sound. By 2008, he achieved massive commercial success with the single "Wearing My Rolex." His album *See Clear Now* also contained major hits like "Cash in My Pocket." His eleventh studio album, *Godfather*, released in 2017, peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart.

Wiley's life has also been marked by significant personal struggle and controversy. He has faced numerous life-threatening situations, including being stabbed more than twenty times in his lifetime. One specific incident in 2008 left him with a visible scar on the left side of his face. In 2018, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to music. However, in February 2024, the Honours Forfeiture Committee stripped him of this honor. This decision was made because his social media posts were considered to bring the honors system into disrepute.

Beyond the music itself, Wiley's influence is seen in how grime culture spread. In the mid-2000s, tracks were shared rapidly through Bluetooth file sharing on mobile phones. This occurred at schools and on public transport, creating a grassroots network before the era of modern streaming. His ability to innovate through technology and community connections helped cement his legacy in British music history.
