He is widely recognized by critics and peers as one of the finest comic book writers in the English language. While many people use the term "graphic novel," Moore prefers the word "comic." He views "graphic novel" as a marketing term created in the 1980s. His work has helped bring greater social respectability to the medium of comics in both the United Kingdom and the United States. He has written everything from short strips to massive, experimental prose novels.

Moore's process as a writer evolved through specific stages of skill development. In his early career, he attempted to act as both writer and illustrator. However, he eventually realized he could not draw well enough or fast enough to earn a living as an artist.

To master the art of the script, he sought advice from his friend, writer Steve Moore. He began by writing very short, four-to-five-page stories for the magazine 2000 AD. This practice served as a vital education. It taught him how to construct a complete, effective story within a very limited space.

His early professional work included many different types of publications and identities. He often used pseudonyms, which are false names used by authors. For example, he used the name Curt Vile to draw comics for the magazine Dark Star. He also used the name Jill de Ray to write a strip called Maxwell the Magic Cat for the Northants Post. During this period, he worked for various British publishers, including Marvel UK and the creators of the magazine Warrior. These early years allowed him to build a reputation as a prolific freelance writer.

Moore's career reached new heights when he began working for DC Comics in America. He was the first British comics writer to achieve significant prominence in the American market. During this time, he worked on iconic characters such as Batman in "The Killing Joke" and Superman in "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" He also significantly developed the character Swamp Thing. Perhaps his most famous original creation from this era is the series Watchmen. These works helped change how the world viewed the complexity of comic book storytelling.

Moore's personal history is deeply tied to his hometown of Northampton, England. He was born there on November 18, 1953, into a working-class family. He grew up in an area called The Boroughs, which was a poverty-stricken community. Despite the lack of facilities, Moore expressed a deep love for the people and the community there. This connection to his roots is evident in his writing. His massive 1,266-page experimental novel, Jerusalem, is set in Northampton and draws heavily from his life experiences there.

Beyond traditional comics, Moore explores complex themes like anarchism and the occult. An occultist is someone who studies or practices mysterious or magical traditions. He has integrated these interests into works like Promethea and V for Vendetta.

He even performs avant-garde spoken word "workings" with a group called The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels. His interest in these subjects often leads to experimental formats. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he moved away from the mainstream industry to produce independent, experimental works like the epic From Hell.

Moore's impact extends into the world of cinema and modern literature. Although he often objects to the practice, several of his stories have been adapted into Hollywood films. Notable examples include the films for From Hell (2001), The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003), V for Vendetta (2005), and Watchmen (2009).
