It was written by Arthur Koestler. The book tells the story of a man named Rubashov. He was once a leader in a big group called the Party. Now, he is in prison. He is being questioned for treason. Treason means working against your own government.

Rubashov spends his time thinking about his life. He talks to a man in the next cell. They use a tapping code on the walls to speak. This helps them share news and stories. The book looks at how people act when they hold power. It shows how some leaders hurt many people to reach a goal.

Koestler wrote this book during a scary time. He had to hide from the police. He often feared they would take his work away. For a long time, the original German pages were lost. People thought they were gone forever. But a copy was found in a library in 2015. Now, readers can see the story in its original way. It is one of the best books of the 20th century.
