He was born in Barcelona around the year 1340. His family was full of scholars who studied deeply. He became a famous teacher of Jewish law. People also call him a philosopher. He used reason to think about big ideas. This way of thinking is called being a rationalist. He is remembered alongside other great thinkers like Maimonides.

Hasdai had a very busy and important life. He studied under a teacher named Nissim of Gerona. Later, he became a leader in his community. He even held the job of crown rabbi of Aragon. He taught many students during his life. Some of his students were very famous too. Joseph Albo was one of his most well-known pupils. Other students included Mattathias of Zaragoza and Zechariah ha-Levi.

His life was not always easy or peaceful. In 1378, he was put in prison. This happened because of a false accusation. He also faced unfair treatment because he was Jewish. In the year 1391, a very sad event occurred. His only son was killed during a massacre that year. Even after these hard times, he kept working. His mind stayed strong despite his sadness. He wrote many of his best works after that year.

Hasdai wrote books that changed how people thought.

His most famous book is called "The Light of the Lord." This book looked at old ideas about the world. It helped lead to a big change in science later on. He also wrote a book in 1398. It was written in Old Catalan. This book was about the main ideas of Christianity. He wrote it to explain why Jews held to their faith. A Hebrew translation of this work still exists today.

We can see his influence in history even now. His deep thoughts helped a thinker named Baruch Spinoza. Hasdai was also a man of means. In 1393, King John I of Aragon chose him for a job. The King made him the executor for his uncle, Vitalis Azday. This shows that even non-Jews respected him. He traveled to many towns in Navarre in 1401. King Charles III of Navarre even paid for his travels.
