He was a Jewish philosopher, a doctor, and a poet. Many people knew him by the pen name Leo the Hebrew. His family was very important in the Middle Ages. They served in the royal court of Castile. His father, Isaac, was a famous advisor to a king. This family held high positions in public service for a long time.

Life changed deeply for the Abravanel family in 1492. The rulers of Spain, Isabella and Ferdinand, made a new law. All Jews in Spain had to leave or change their faith. Judah's father tried to ask the monarchs to change this rule. He even tried to use money to help his people. However, the decree stayed in place. This was a very hard time for the family.

They chose to leave their homes rather than change their religion.

Because they had to leave, the family moved to many places. They traveled through Spain and eventually settled in Naples, Italy. Judah lived in several cities like Genoa, Barletta, and Venice. In these places, he worked as a doctor for important people. He also spent much time studying with famous thinkers. These scholars were interested in big ideas about the world. This time in Italy helped him write his most famous work.

His greatest book is called Dialogues of Love.

He wrote it around the years 1501 or 1502. The book is a conversation between two characters named Philo and Sophia. Philo represents love or appetite. Sophia represents wisdom or science. Together, their names suggest the idea of philosophy. They discuss many things, such as the difference between love and desire. They also talk about how wisdom can lead to happiness.

Many people around the world read his work. It was published in many different languages, including Italian, French, Hebrew, and Latin. It was special because it was written in a common language. Some people later claimed that Judah changed his faith to Christianity. However, his own writing says he follows the law of Moses. He wrote that his book was based on Hebrew truth. This shows he stayed true to his Jewish identity throughout his life.
