Isaac Abarbanel was a very important man in the 1400s.

He was a statesman who dealt with big political issues. His life was full of many changes and travels. Many people still study his ideas today.

His work followed a very clear way. When he wrote about the Bible, he did not just explain the words. He also looked at the social and political world. He wanted to show how old stories related to modern life.

He worked as a treasurer for King Afonso V of Portugal. Later, he moved to Castile in 1483 to stay safe. He eventually served the royal house of Castile in Spain. He also worked for the kings in Naples and Venice.

He used his large fortune to help his community.

When Jewish captives were in danger in Morocco, he paid to free them. In Spain, he tried to stop a law that forced Jews to leave. He offered the kings 30,000 ducats to change their minds. He even offered 600,000 crowns to help his people stay. Sadly, he could not change the law. He had to leave Spain with his fellow Jews.

His writings are grouped into three main kinds. One kind is called exegesis, which is explaining religious texts. Another kind is philosophy, which looks at science and religion. The third kind is apologetics, which defends specific religious ideas.
