Arnaut Daniel

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Arnaut Daniel was a famous poet from the 12th century. He was an Occitan troubadour, which means he wrote songs. People have admired his skill for hundreds of years. The writer Dante called him "the better craftsman." Another famous writer named Petrarch called him a "grand master of love." Even in the 20th century, Ezra Pound said he was the greatest poet ever.

Daniel had a very unique way of writing his poems. He used a style called trobar clus, or "hermetic verse." This style made his meanings very hard to understand. He used strange words and complicated rhyme schemes to create puzzles. He even invented a special way to write a stanza. In this way, no lines rhymed with each other in the same group. Instead, the rhymes only matched with lines in the next stanza.

He is most famous for inventing the sestina. A sestina is a song with six stanzas. Each stanza has six lines. The same six words end every single line. These words repeat in a very tricky and intricate order. This was a brand new way to build a poem.

We do not know everything about his life. Some say he was born to a noble family at Ribérac castle. Others say he was a student who lost money playing dice. We only have sixteen of his lyrics today. One of these songs was written around the year 1181. We do not have his original music. An anonymous person wrote music for one song a century after he died.

His work changed how other writers created art. Dante used the sestina form in his own songs. Dante even included Daniel as a character in his famous book, the Divine Comedy. In that book, Daniel speaks in his own language, Old Occitan. The poet T.S. Eliot also used Daniel's ideas in his work. He even titled a book after the lines Daniel wrote. Daniel's clever style still connects many writers together today.
