He was born on March 6, 1967, in Queens, New York City. His family moved to Florida when he was very young. As a teenager, he even tried to run for a local city council seat. He was only 17 years old during his first attempt in 1985. While he did not win, he later went to school to study law. He earned a degree in philosophy and then a law degree from New York University in 1994.

Greenwald spent many years working as a lawyer. In 1996, he started his own law firm. He focused on cases about civil rights and the First Amendment. The First Amendment is a part of the U.S. Constitution that protects free speech. He believed in protecting these rights for everyone, even people he did not like. In 2005, he decided to stop practicing law full-time. He wanted to do work that he felt would have a bigger impact. This led him to start writing about politics and national security.

His career in writing grew very quickly through different websites. He started a blog called Unclaimed Territory in 2005. This blog won an award for being the best new blog in 2006. Later, he wrote for a website called Salon and a British newspaper called The Guardian.

In 2012, he joined The Guardian to reach more people around the world. He used his writing to look closely at how governments act. He often spoke about the importance of privacy and freedom for all citizens.

One of his most famous moments happened in 2013. He worked with a man named Edward Snowden to share secret documents. These papers showed that the U.S. and UK had global surveillance programs. This means they were watching many people's digital information.

This big discovery won many important prizes. The Guardian won a Pulitzer Prize in 2014 for this work. Greenwald also won a George Polk Award for his reporting. His work was even featured in an Oscar-winning movie called Citizenfour.

After his work with The Guardian, Greenwald helped start a news site. In 2014, he co-founded The Intercept with other journalists.

He served as an editor there for several years. However, he resigned from the site in October 2020. He said he left because of disagreements over how to report certain stories. Now, he shares his ideas through his own newsletter and a show on Rumble. He continues to write about important events happening in different countries, like Brazil.
