Born on March 6, 1967, in Queens, New York City, he spent much of his life in Florida. His early interest in public service began in high school. At age 17, he ran for an at-large seat on the Lauderdale Lakes City Council in 1985. He received 7% of the vote in that election. He ran again in 1991 and earned 18% of the vote. After these attempts, he shifted his focus toward academic study. He earned a B.A. in philosophy from George Washington University in 1990. Later, he received a J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1994.

Greenwald began his professional career in the legal field. He worked at the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz from 1994 to 1995. In 1996, he co-founded his own firm, Greenwald Christoph & Holland. His legal practice focused on constitutional law and civil rights. He often worked pro bono, which means providing legal services for free. He represented controversial figures to defend the principle of free speech. He believed the First Amendment should protect everyone, even those with unpopular views. In 2005, he chose to end his full-time legal practice. He wanted to pursue political writing to create a larger social impact.

His transition to journalism began with his blog, Unclaimed Territory. This blog focused on national security and government investigations. In 2006, the blog won the Koufax Award for "Best New Blog." Greenwald soon moved to the website Salon in 2007. He wrote frequently about the CIA and the NSA. He also defended the motives of whistle-blowers like Chelsea Manning. In 2012, he joined the American wing of the British newspaper The Guardian.

He wanted to reach a more international audience through this role. This move set the stage for his most significant journalistic work.

In 2013, Greenwald participated in a massive global surveillance disclosure. He was contacted by Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor. Snowden possessed classified documents regarding secret government programs. Greenwald worked alongside documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras to publish these findings. On June 5, 2013, they revealed a top-secret court order involving Verizon. This order required the NSA to collect telephone metadata. The reporting showed the scale of domestic surveillance under the Obama administration.

This work proved that the U.S. and UK monitored global communications.

This investigative work received significant international recognition. The Guardian and The Washington Post won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Greenwald also shared the 2013 George Polk Award with two other reporters. His involvement was featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary Citizenfour.

Even his life was depicted in the 2016 film Snowden, where he was played by Zachary Quinto. Despite these honors, he faced pressure from intelligence officials. In 2017, officials reportedly lobbied to label him an "information broker." The White House ultimately rejected this request to allow for increased surveillance against him.

In 2014, Greenwald co-founded a new news organization called The Intercept. The site was launched by First Look Media with funding from Pierre Omidyar. Greenwald served as an editor for several years. During this time, the site engaged with various political leaks and data breaches. However, Greenwald resigned from the organization in October 2020. He cited political censorship and contractual breaches by his editors. He claimed they blocked him from reporting on specific political conduct. The editor-in-chief of The Intercept disputed these claims of censorship.

Since leaving The Intercept, Greenwald has focused on independent publishing. He uses platforms like Substack and his own newsletter to reach readers. He also hosts a show called System Update on Rumble. His work continues to cover international corruption and government transparency. In 2019, he published leaked conversations regarding Operation Car Wash in Brazil. These leaks involved senior officials and an investigative judge. This work shows his ongoing commitment to examining how power is used globally. He remains a central figure in the debate over press freedom and government oversight.
