He is best known as the founder of WikiLeaks, an organization created in 2006. WikiLeaks focuses on publishing leaked documents to the public. This work involves sharing secret information that might otherwise stay hidden. Assange's work has sparked global debates about press freedom and government secrecy. His actions have influenced how people view the power of information on the internet.

Assange's interest in computers began during his youth in Australia. He grew up moving between more than thirty different towns and cities. In his mid-teens, he settled in Melbourne and studied mathematics and physics. He became a skilled hacker using the pseudonym Mendax.

He joined a group called the International Subversives. This group targeted various computer systems, including those used by the U.S. military. Assange followed a personal code of ethics during this time. He believed in finding and sharing information without damaging or crashing the systems he accessed.

In 1996, Assange faced significant legal consequences for his hacking activities. He was charged with 31 counts of crimes related to computer access. These included charges like defrauding Telecom Australia and altering data.

The prosecution argued that his group provided a "hacker's manual" to others. However, Assange maintained that he only inserted his own computer programs. He eventually reached a plea deal in the County Court. The judge sentenced him to a fine of A$2,100 and a good behavior bond. The court noted his disrupted childhood and a lack of malicious intent.

After founding WikiLeaks, Assange gained international fame through major document releases. In 2010, the organization published a massive series of leaks from Chelsea Manning. These leaks included U.S. military logs from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also featured footage of a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad.

Additionally, the group released sensitive U.S. diplomatic cables. These publications earned Assange over two dozen awards for journalism. His work showed the public how governments and military groups operated in secret.

These publications led to intense legal and political conflicts. In 2012, Assange sought refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

Ecuador granted him asylum because he feared political persecution. He remained in the embassy for several years while his legal status was debated. In 2019, his asylum was withdrawn after disputes with Ecuadorian authorities. He was arrested and sent to HM Prison Belmarsh in London. During this time, the U.S. government unsealed indictments against him. These charges involved violating the Espionage Act of 1917.

Critics of the U.S. government argued these charges were unprecedented. They claimed that prosecuting Assange threatened the future of investigative journalism. The government alleged he conspired to obtain and disclose classified national defense documents.

The legal battle lasted for years as lawyers contested the extradition efforts. In 2022, the Australian Labor government stated it would lobby for his release. This marked a change from the positions held by previous Australian governments.

The legal saga reached a conclusion in 2024. Following a High Court ruling, Assange and his lawyers negotiated a plea deal.

He traveled to the Northern Mariana Islands to appear in court. There, he pleaded guilty to one charge related to the Espionage Act. In exchange for his plea, he received a sentence of time served. This allowed him to leave the United Kingdom and return home. On June 26, 2024, Assange arrived in Australia. His life remains a central example of the tension between state security and the public's right to know.
