He was born on July 3, 1971, in Townsville, Queensland. His mother, Christine, was a visual artist. His father was John Shipton, an anti-war activist. Julian grew up moving between many different towns in Australia. He eventually settled in Melbourne during his teenage years. He studied math and physics at several different universities. Even though he did not finish a degree, he learned a lot about computers.

As a teenager, Assange became a very skilled hacker.

He used the name Mendax when he worked online. He was part of a group called the International Subversives. This group looked for weaknesses in computer systems. Assange had his own rules for his hacking. He did not want to break or destroy any data. He mostly wanted to find and share information. In 1996, he faced legal trouble for his hacking. A judge gave him a fine instead of sending him to prison.

In 2006, Assange founded a group called WikiLeaks.

WikiLeaks is a way to publish secret documents for the whole world to see. In 2010, the group became very famous. They shared many files from a person named Chelsea Manning. These files included military logs and videos from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They also showed private diplomatic messages. Because of this work, Assange won over twenty different awards for journalism. His work helped people see how governments and powerful groups act.

His work led to many difficult legal battles.

In 2012, he went to the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to ask for help. Ecuador gave him asylum because he feared being sent to the United States. He lived inside that embassy for many years. In 2019, he was arrested and sent to a prison in London. The U.S. government charged him with several crimes under the Espionage Act of 1917. These charges were about the documents he shared through WikiLeaks. Many people argued about whether these charges were fair to journalists.

After a long time, the legal fight finally reached an end.

In 2024, Assange and U.S. officials reached a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to one charge in the Northern Mariana Islands. In exchange, he did not have to serve more time in prison. This deal allowed him to finally return to his home country. He flew back to Australia on June 26, 2024. His story is a major part of modern history regarding the internet and the news. It shows how much power information can have in our world.
