These secrets came from files shared by a man named Edward Snowden. He was a contractor for the NSA, which is a U.S. intelligence agency. Snowden worked for a company called Booz Allen Hamilton. While working there, he obtained many top secret documents. These files showed how different countries watch people all over the world. This news changed how many people think about privacy and government work.

Many different programs were used to collect this information.

One major program was called PRISM. Through PRISM, the NSA could collect data from big tech companies. These companies included Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Yahoo. Other programs had different names, like XKeyscore or MUSCULAR. Some programs used data from phone companies like Verizon and AT&T. These programs allowed agencies to see a lot of digital information very quickly.

Snowden began sharing these documents in June 2013.

He met with journalists from The Guardian and The Washington Post in Hong Kong. He gave the documents to them so they could tell the public. Many other news groups later shared the information too. This included groups from Germany, Brazil, France, and many other places. The documents showed that many countries worked together in a group called the UKUSA community. They had secret deals to share data they collected from citizens.

There were many important names and numbers in these reports.

Some officials estimated that there were 1.7 million U.S. intelligence files leaked. In Britain, officials said there were at least 58,000 files. In Australia, they estimated at least 15,000 files were part of the leak. The U.S. government charged Snowden with espionage and theft of government property. Because of this, Snowden was granted asylum in Russia in July 2013. This event made the relationship between the U.S. and Russia much worse.

These events connect to how we use the internet today.

We use companies like Google and Facebook every single day. The Snowden disclosures showed that our digital lives are connected to government agencies. Some leaders, like President Barack Obama, said the news was shared in a way that caused a lot of heat. Others thought the leaks were a very big setback for intelligence agencies. Even today, people study these files to understand how much data is collected. It helps us think about our privacy in a digital world.
