The National Security Agency, or NSA, is a major part of the United States Department of Defense.

Its main job is to collect and study information from around the world. This special work is called signals intelligence, or SIGINT. The agency also works hard to protect U.S. computer networks and information systems. Most of the ways they do this work are kept very secret. This helps the government stay informed about what is happening globally.

To do its job, the NSA uses many different tools and methods. They monitor and process huge amounts of data from many places. Sometimes, they even use physical tools to listen to electronic systems. The agency also works with a group called the Central Security Service. This group helps the NSA work better with other parts of the military. The director of the NSA also leads the United States Cyber Command. This keeps all the different parts of the agency working together smoothly.

The history of this work goes back a very long time. In 1917, a small unit was formed to break codes during World War I. Later, a group called the Black Chamber was created in 1919. It was the first group in the U.S. to do this work during peacetime. President Harry S. Truman officially created the NSA in 1952.

Before that, a group called the AFSA tried to do similar work. However, the AFSA struggled to work well with other government agencies. Truman's decision helped make the work more organized and central.

There are many interesting facts about the size and reach of the NSA. The agency employs roughly 32,000 people to do its work. In 2013, information showed the CIA had a larger budget of $14.7 billion. The NSA has a large presence in many different countries across the globe. Some of its secret teams, like the Special Collection Service, work in many places. They have even been linked to software like Stuxnet. This software was used to affect a nuclear program in Iran.

The work of the NSA has often caused big debates in politics. During the Vietnam War, the agency monitored many people in the U.S. This included leaders of the civil rights movement. Later, in 1975, the Church Committee looked into how the agency used its power. In 2013, a man named Edward Snowden shared secret files with the public. These files showed that the NSA collects data from over a billion people. This includes cell phone information and internet traffic from many countries.
