He lived in the United States and worked for the government. For many years, he secretly worked for other countries too. He spied for the Soviet Union and later for Russia. This spying lasted from 1979 until 2001. The U.S. government called his actions a huge intelligence disaster. He did not spy for political reasons or beliefs. Instead, he did it to make a lot of money.

He would leave packages in places like Foxstone Park in Virginia. He also sent anonymous letters to ask for money. Once, he even went to a Russian embassy parking garage. There, he met an officer to offer his services. He used a secret code name, "Ramon Garcia," during his work. He was very careful to stay anonymous to the Russians.

Robert Hanssen grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He was born on April 18, 1944. He went to Knox College and earned a degree in chemistry. Later, he studied business and earned an MBA in 1971. He worked for the Chicago Police Department before joining the FBI. He became a special agent in January 1976.

His secrets caused great harm to people. He gave away the names of secret agents working for the U.S. Some of these people were executed because of his betrayal. He earned over $1.4 million in cash, diamonds, and watches. This was a huge amount of money for that time.

Finding the spy was a very hard job for the FBI. They used fingerprints and voice analysis to identify him.
