Edward Joseph Snowden is a former intelligence contractor and whistleblower. He is widely known for leaking classified documents that revealed global surveillance programs. These programs were operated by the United States National Security Agency (NSA). His actions sparked a massive global debate regarding national security and individual privacy.

Snowden's disclosures showed how intelligence agencies monitor digital communications. This event changed how the world views the relationship between governments and technology.

Snowden's career involved working deep within the world of computer security. He began working for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2006. He served in the global communications division at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Later, he was stationed in Geneva, Switzerland, to maintain computer-network security. In 2009, he moved to a role as a contractor for Dell. Through Dell, he managed computer systems for the NSA at several locations.

He eventually worked as a lead technologist in Hawaii. In this role, he focused on the electronic monitoring of China and North Korea.

Snowden utilized his high-level access to gather information about government spying. He worked for Booz Allen Hamilton for two months in 2013. During this time, he sought to collect data regarding worldwide surveillance activity. He eventually traveled to Hong Kong in May 2013 to meet with journalists. He shared thousands of classified documents with reporters like Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras.

These documents detailed how the NSA and the Five Eyes intelligence alliance operated. They showed cooperation between telecommunications companies and various European governments.

The surveillance programs revealed by Snowden were vast in scale. The disclosures included information on programs like PRISM.

These programs allowed for the collection of data from internet and telephone traffic. Investigators estimated that Snowden provided between 50,000 and 200,000 classified documents. Many of these files were copied while he was working for Dell. The scale of this information revealed a massive infrastructure for digital monitoring. This revealed how much data could be collected from people across the globe.

The legal response to Snowden's actions was immediate and serious. On June 21, 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice unsealed charges against him. He faced two counts of violating the Espionage Act of 1917. He was also charged with the theft of government property.

Following these charges, the Department of State revoked his passport. This prevented him from traveling freely to other countries. He spent a month at Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow while waiting for legal clarity.

Snowden eventually found a new life in Russia. He was granted asylum and later became a naturalized Russian citizen in 2022. He has also focused on advocacy for digital rights. In 2016, he became the president of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. This nonprofit organization works to protect journalists from government surveillance and hacking.

He also published a memoir titled Permanent Record in 2019. His life continues to be defined by his work in the digital and political spheres.

The impact of Snowden's disclosures has reached the highest levels of the legal system. In the case of United States v. Moalin, a federal court issued a significant ruling. In September 2020, the court ruled that one mass surveillance program was illegal. The court suggested the program might have been unconstitutional. This ruling demonstrates the lasting legal consequences of the information he released. His story remains a central part of discussions about digital privacy and state power.
