This was a full-length portrait of a man named Sir William Grant. He said this single picture suddenly lifted him into fame.

After his success in Europe, Stuart returned to the United States. He had a very big goal for his return. He wanted to paint a portrait of George Washington.

He moved to Philadelphia in 1795 to work on this. Washington sat for him later that same year. Stuart painted many different versions of Washington. His most famous one is called the Athenaeum portrait. He finished the face but left the rest of the painting unfinished. He made about 50 copies of the face to sell to people.

Even though he was a great artist, he often had money troubles. He was sometimes in danger of going to debtors' prison. In 1824, he had a stroke that made part of his body unable to move. He still kept painting for two more years. He died in Boston on July 9, 1828, at the age of 72.

Today, we can see Stuart's amazing skill in many places. His paintings are kept in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. They are also in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. You might even see his work in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His daughter, Jane Stuart, was also an artist. She helped keep his memory alive by selling his paintings. His life shows how art can connect a person to history forever.
