Dogs Playing Poker

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Many people recognize the funny sight of dogs sitting around a card table. These famous oil paintings are called "Dogs Playing Poker." They were made by an American artist named Cassius Marcellus Coolidge. He created these works between 1894 and 1910. Most of the paintings show dogs playing the game of poker. Some of them show dogs doing other human things instead. These paintings are very popular in the United States. People often call this type of art "kitsch" when they use it for home decoration.

In these scenes, the dogs act just like people. They are often large breeds like Great Danes, St. Bernards, or collies. The dogs sit on leather chairs in rooms with dim lighting. A lamp on the ceiling helps light the table. Some dogs even drink or smoke while they play. They look like businessmen or lawyers from the middle class. You will not see any humans in these paintings.

The paintings often tell a little story through action. In a painting called "A Friend in Need," a bulldog slips an ace to a friend. Another painting, "A Bold Bluff," shows a St. Bernard holding two cards. The other dogs look like they are wondering if he is cheating. In "A Waterloo," the same dogs lose to the St. Bernard. He uses his paws to grab his winnings. These stories often focus on themes like mistrust or secrets.

Coolidge made many different paintings in this style. He was asked by a company to make sixteen paintings for cigar ads in 1903. Not all of them are about poker, though. Some show dogs playing baseball or football. One painting, "Riding the Goat," shows dogs starting a new member into a group. Other paintings show dogs dancing in a ballroom or traveling in a car. He even painted dogs playing a game called "kelly pool."

These images are part of our popular culture today. You can see them in many movies and TV shows. For example, the show "The Simpsons" has mentioned them. They have even appeared on music album covers. The paintings are also worth a lot of money. In 2015, a painting called "Poker Game" sold for $658,000. This was the highest price ever paid for one of his works.
