The Card Players

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Card Players is a famous series of five oil paintings. They were made by the French artist Paul Cézanne. These works are very important to art history. Critics call them a cornerstone of his work from the 1890s. They act as a prelude to his most famous years. Each painting shows men from Provence playing cards. These men are local farmhands who worked on his family estate. They look very serious and focused on their game.

Cézanne used a very specific way to show these scenes. He did not show loud or rowdy gamblers like older artists did. Instead, his men are quiet and studious. They look down at their cards rather than at each other. This makes the scenes feel like a "human still life." Some people think the men's focus mirrors how the artist works. In the two-player versions, a single wine bottle sits on the table. This bottle acts as a dividing line between the players.

To prepare for these paintings, Cézanne did a lot of work. He made many drawings and studies of local workers. He may have even sketched some ideas in a cafe. X-rays show he used graphite underdrawings to plan his work. Scientists think he used smaller versions to help him finish larger ones. He had to figure out how to place the men correctly on the canvas. This was a hard job that required many careful steps.

There are many different versions of these paintings. The largest one is 134.6 by 180.3 cm. It has five people, including three players and two spectators. A boy sits watching the game with his eyes cast down. Another version in New York has only four people. The men in that version all wear hats. The smallest version is in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. It is very refined and uses bright colors on the tablecloth.

These paintings are among the most valuable in the world. One version was sold to the Royal Family of Qatar in 2011. The price was estimated at $250 million. This was a record for the highest price for a painting. The paintings are now kept in many famous places. You can find them in Philadelphia, New York, London, and Paris. They help us understand how artists study light and shape. They also show us a quiet moment from long ago.
