Later, his mother married a man named Peter Pelham. Pelham was an artist who taught writing and math. Young Copley likely learned to use brushes and tools in this home. He was very good at drawing human bodies with great care.

Copley became a master at many kinds of art. He painted portraits using oil paints to show people's faces. He was also a pioneer in using pastels. Pastels are soft sticks of color used for drawing.

He was great at showing how different textures feel. He could make a painting look like real fabric or skin. He even learned how to engrave metal plates. This allowed him to make prints of his work. He worked very hard to improve his skills every day.

His big break happened because of one special painting.

He painted a picture of his half-brother playing with a pet squirrel. This painting was sent to an exhibition in England in 1766. A famous artist named Benjamin West saw it and loved the colors. This success made Copley a Fellow of the Society of Artists of Great Britain. He became well known for his talent across the ocean. People began to see him as a true professional.

Copley lived through many changes in his life. He stayed in America for a long time to support his mother and brother. He earned about 300 Guineas a year from his work. In 1774, he finally moved to London and stayed there.

In England, he painted large history paintings. These were big works that showed modern people in modern clothes. He was very successful in London for about twenty years. However, his later years were difficult and he died with much debt.

We can still see Copley's impact on art today. His work shows us what life looked like in the 1700s. He was one of the first American artists to find fame in Europe.
