While studying, he kept a journal filled with sketches of plants and animals. He also drew maps and studies of machines. Later, he moved to the United States in 1786. He lived in Philadelphia before moving to Washington, D.C. He used his many skills to help build a new nation.

His career began with a big competition in 1792.

The government wanted a design for the new U.S. Capitol. Thornton submitted a plan inspired by famous buildings in Europe. These included the Louvre in France and the Pantheon in Rome. His design was called simple, noble, and beautiful by Thomas Jefferson. He won a prize of $500 and a city lot for his winning idea. He then served as a supervisor for the building until 1802.

Thornton designed several other important buildings in the area.

Even sports were part of his work. He designed the Washington City Race Course, which was a one-mile track for horses. Many of these structures are now on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are recognized as very important to history.

In 1802, Thornton became the first Superintendent of the Patent Office.

This office helps inventors protect their new ideas. In 1814, the British burned much of Washington, D.C. Thornton worked hard to convince them not to burn the Patent Office. He believed the office was too important to mankind to lose. He stayed in this role until he died in 1828. His life shows how one person can impact many different fields.
