This building is a central part of American history and government.

Building the White House was a big job that took many years. An architect named James Hoban won a contest to design the house.

He based his design on buildings found in Ireland. Workers used sandstone from Aquia Creek to build the exterior walls. Enslaved African-Americans helped by quarrying the stone for the project.

To protect the stone, workers painted the walls with a white mixture. This is how the building got its famous name.

The history of the building includes some very difficult times. During the War of 1812, British forces set the mansion on fire in 1814.

The fire destroyed the inside and damaged the outside walls. People began to fix the damage almost right away. President James Monroe moved into the partially rebuilt house in October 1817. Later, new parts like the North Portico were added in 1829.

Many changes happened to the building as the government grew. In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt moved offices to a new West Wing.

President William Howard Taft expanded this wing in 1909. He also created the very first Oval Office there. In 1948, the building's inside walls were not strong enough. President Harry Truman had to build a new steel frame inside.

Today, the White House is a large complex with many different parts. It includes the main Executive Residence where the president lives. There is also the West Wing and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
