Every president has lived there since John Adams moved in in 1800.

An architect named James Hoban designed the house. He won a contest to build it. Workers used stone for the walls. Enslaved people helped by getting the stone from a creek.

The walls were painted white to protect them. This gave the building its name.

During a war in 1814, British forces set the house on fire. The inside was destroyed. People worked hard to fix it. President James Monroe moved in after much of it was rebuilt.

The building has changed over time. President Theodore Roosevelt built a West Wing for offices in 1901. Later, President Harry Truman fixed the inside. He added a steel frame to make it strong.
