The four-eyed fish is a very special animal.

It only has two eyes. But those eyes are high on its head. They look like they are bulging out. This helps the fish see in two ways at once.

Each eye is split into two parts. A dark strip of tissue divides them. The top part is for seeing in the air. The bottom part is for seeing in the water. The lens inside the eye changes thickness. This helps the fish see clearly in both worlds.

These fish live near the water's surface. They eat bugs that land on the water. They also eat small fish and tiny plants. Most live in fresh or salty water. You can find them in Mexico and South America. Some can even live out of water for a short time. One type, Anableps microlepis, can grow up to 32 cm long. This makes it a very large fish in its group.
