The four-eyed fish is a truly amazing creature.

Even though they have this name, they only have two eyes. These eyes sit high on top of their heads. This special shape lets them live right at the water's surface. They can look up at the sky and down into the water at the same time. This helps them find food and stay safe. It is a clever way to live in two worlds at once.

Their eyes work in a very special way.

Each eye is split into two halves by a dark strip of tissue. The top half is made for seeing through the air. The bottom half is made for seeing through the water. The lens inside the eye actually changes thickness from top to bottom. This helps the fish see clearly in both environments. The bottom part of the eye has even more sensory neurons. This gives them very sharp vision underwater.

Scientists have studied how these fish see through tests. One test is called the optomotor response, or OMR.

Researchers used this to see how the fish react to movement. They covered the eyes to see how the fish behaved. They found that the fish respond more strongly to things in the air. This shows how much they use their upper vision. It helps us understand how their brains process what they see.

There are three different species of these fish.

One is the largescale foureyes, named Anableps anableps. Linnaeus first described this fish in 1758. Another is the Pacific foureyed fish, known as Anableps dowei. T. N. Gill named it in 1861. The third is Anableps microlepis, named in 1844. This species can grow up to 32 cm long. That makes it the largest in its group.

These fish live in many different places.

You can find them from Mexico to Honduras. They also live in northern South America. Some can even be found on the island of Trinidad. They like fresh water or brackish water. Most of them eat insects that land on the surface. They might also eat small fish or tiny plants. They are very good at using the surface to find meals.
