Tarpon can live in salt water and fresh water. They use a special part called a swim bladder to help them breathe. This part lets them take gulps of air from the surface. This is helpful in places where the water has very little oxygen.

Baby tarpon start in warm, clear ocean water. As they grow, they move to salt marshes or rivers. They eat tiny sea life or small fish. Adults are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. They often hunt at night. Adult tarpon can grow very large. They are famous for leaping high out of the water. Many people enjoy catching them for sport. Most people let them go back into the water.
