She did not like plain or empty rooms. Instead, she used bright and bold colors to make spaces feel alive. She often used large patterns that covered whole walls. One of her most famous patterns was called cabbage rose. This was a floral fabric that many people loved to buy. She believed that lovely, clear colors could help people feel happy. This way of decorating is sometimes called the "Draper touch."

Her work followed a very specific and exciting way. She liked to mix many different things together in one room. She might put stripes next to floral patterns. She used shiny black ceilings and bright green woodwork. Sometimes she would even use cherry-red floors. She also loved using large mirrors and oversized details. She even used black and white tiles to create a strong look. This style of mixing old and new is called Modern Baroque.

Dorothy Draper grew up in a wealthy family in Tuxedo Park, New York. Her family had homes in Manhattan and in Newport, Rhode Island. She learned about history by traveling to Europe with her family. This helped her understand old styles that she would later change. She married George Draper in 1912. After they bought and sold houses, she began decorating them. This led her to start her own design business in 1925. It is considered one of the first official interior design companies.

She worked on many famous buildings and hotels. In the early 1930s, she redecorated the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. She also worked on the Sherry-Netherland and the Drake Hotel in Chicago. One of her biggest jobs was at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. It took her only 16 months to change the whole resort. For that project, she used 40,000 gallons of paint. She also used 15,000 rolls of wallpaper and 45,000 yards of fabric. She even designed the menus and the uniforms for the staff there.

Many people followed her advice for their own homes. She wrote a column in 70 different newspapers. She told people to paint their front doors bright red. People even bought over a million yards of her rose fabric. Her ideas helped start the Hollywood Regency style of decorating. This style uses grand and shiny details to make a room look special. Even today, many modern designers look at her work to find new ideas. Her colorful legacy still makes many rooms feel bright and happy.
