She was born Margaret Yvonne Middleton in Vancouver, Canada. Her mother, Marie, wanted her to have a career in show business. Marie made sure Peggy received singing and dancing lessons from a young age. Peggy even joined a church choir to make her voice stronger. She was a very talented child who loved to write poems and plays.

To find work, Yvonne and her mother moved to Los Angeles. She first found success as a dancer in Hollywood nightclubs. She worked at a place called the Florentine Gardens. There, she performed a famous dance in a "King Kong number." In this dance, she cast off veils before a gorilla carried her away.

She also entered many beauty contests to help her career. These early steps helped her move from dancing into acting.

Her acting career grew through many different steps. She started with very small parts in movies at Paramount Pictures. Sometimes she only had one line to say on screen. She worked hard to get noticed by big directors. In 1945, she had a breakthrough in the film Salome, Where She Danced. This role made her a real star.
