The Dilophosaurus was a very important dinosaur from a long time ago.

It lived in North America during the Early Jurassic period. This was about 186 million years ago. At that time, it was one of the largest land animals in North America. It was a predatory dinosaur, which means it was a hunter.

This animal was slender and lightly built rather than heavy. Its name actually means "two-crested lizard." This name describes the two ridges on its head. Scientists are still learning about how this amazing hunter lived.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of moving and eating.

It was bipedal, so it walked on two legs. Its neck was long and had very light, hollow bones. The dinosaur had powerful arms with four fingers on each hand. One finger was short but very strong with a large claw. Because its arms were short, its mouth likely made first contact with prey.

It may have hunted large animals, but it also ate fish and smaller animals. Its teeth were long, thin, and curved. Most of these teeth had tiny ridges called serrations on the edges.

Finding these fossils was a big job for many people.

In 1942, a group led by Charles L. Camp found three skeletons in Arizona. A Navajo man named Jesse Williams helped them find bones from 1940. These fossils were found in a place called the Kayenta Formation.

Later, in 1964, Samuel P. Welles found an even larger adult skeleton. He realized this new skeleton had crests on its skull. This was a huge surprise to the scientists. He then gave the dinosaur its own name in 1970.

There are many interesting facts about this creature's body.

The crests on its head were thin and arched. They might have been larger if they were covered in keratin. The dinosaur could grow very fast when it was young. It grew at a rate of about 10 percent per year.

One famous skeleton even showed signs of healed injuries. Scientists have also found fossil footprints that show where it rested. Even an infant specimen has been found by researchers. These fossils help us see how the dinosaur grew up.

We can connect Dilophosaurus to things we see in stories today.

You might recognize it from the book and movie Jurassic Park. However, the movie gave it fictional traits like spitting venom. In real life, it did not have a neck frill. It also lived alongside other dinosaurs like Scutellosaurus and Sarahsaurus.
