Utahraptor

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Utahraptor was a massive dinosaur that lived a very long time ago.

It lived during the Early Cretaceous period, roughly 139 to 135 million years ago. This dinosaur lived in what is now the United States, specifically in Utah. Its name means "Utah's predator," which tells us a lot about its role in nature.

It was a member of a group called dromaeosaurids. These were feathered, meat-eating dinosaurs. The Utahraptor was much larger and heavier than most of its relatives.

This dinosaur had many special tools to help it hunt for food. Its jaws were lined with small, serrated teeth. These teeth were used along with a huge "killing claw" on its second toe.

This claw was a large, curved bone that supported a sharp tip. The Utahraptor was built to be a heavy, ground-dwelling animal. Unlike some of its cousins that chased prey over long distances, scientists think the Utahraptor was an ambush predator. This means it likely hid and then jumped out to catch animals like ankylosaurs or iguanodonts.

Its feet even had a very tight grip to help it hold on.

Finding these fossils was a big job for many scientists.

Jim Jensen first found specimens in 1975 near the town of Moab. Later, in 1991, Carl Limone found a large claw. This led James Kirkland, Robert Gaston, and Donald Burge to find even more remains in Grand County, Utah. In 1993, Kirkland and his team officially described the dinosaur. They named the first species *Utahraptor ostrommaysi*. This name honors John Ostrom and Chris Mays for their work with dinosaurs.

Scientists have learned many specific details about its body through fossils.

The largest specimens were very big indeed. One specimen had a thigh bone measuring about 115 centimeters long. Some experts estimate the Utahraptor could weigh as much as a modern polar bear. Its skull was boxy and long, similar to the *Velociraptor*. The bones in its tail were shaped in a way that made it very flexible. This flexibility might have helped the dinosaur as it grew to such a large size.

Learning about the Utahraptor helps us see how different dinosaurs lived. Even though it was a fierce hunter, it might not have been a loner. Scientists found fossils of many different ages grouped together. This suggests the Utahraptor was gregarious, which means it lived in social groups. They may have even looked after their young after they hatched. By studying these bones, we can picture a whole world of living things from millions of years ago.
