It lived during the Late Cretaceous epoch about 75 to 71 million years ago. This animal belonged to a group called dromaeosaurids. People often know this dinosaur from the Jurassic Park films.

In those movies, they look quite large. In reality, a Velociraptor was about the size of a turkey. It was a bipedal carnivore, which means it walked on two legs and ate meat. It also had feathers and a long tail.

This dinosaur had a very specific way of moving and hunting. It used its two back feet to walk and run. On each hindfoot, it had a large, sickle-shaped claw.

Scientists think it used these claws to tackle and hold onto prey. The skull of the Velociraptor was also very unique. It was long and low with an upturned snout. The snout made up about 60% of the whole skull length. This shape helped distinguish it from its close relatives.

People first discovered the Velociraptor through fossil remains.

On August 11, 1923, Peter Kaisen found the first known skull. This happened during an expedition to the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi Desert. In 1924, Henry Fairfield Osborn named the new genus Velociraptor. The name comes from Latin words meaning "swift robber." He named the first species V. mongoliensis after Mongolia. This is where many of its fossils were found.

Many important fossils have been found in different places over time.

One very famous specimen is called the "Fighting Dinosaurs." A Polish-Mongolian team found it in 1971. This fossil shows a Velociraptor locked in battle with a Protoceratops. It is now considered a national treasure of Mongolia. Other species have been found too, like V. osmolskae in China. In 2021, scientists even named a new species called Shri devi.

Learning about the Velociraptor helps us see how dinosaurs lived.

Even though it was small, it shared many features with much larger dinosaurs. We can compare its size to a tall human to understand it better. It lived in an environment very different from ours today. By looking at fossils, we can see how it moved and ate. These bones act like a puzzle that tells an old story. It is a wonderful way to learn about the history of our Earth.
