Yinlong was a very special kind of dinosaur. Its name means "hidden dragon" in Mandarin Chinese.

This animal lived a long time ago in China. It belonged to a group called ceratopsians. Most people think of huge dinosaurs when they hear that name. They usually picture big horns and large frills on the head. However, Yinlong was much smaller and had no horns at all. It was one of the earliest members of its group.

This dinosaur had a very interesting way of moving. It was a bipedal herbivore, which means it walked on two legs and ate plants. Its back legs were long and strong to help it move. Its front legs were short and thin with three fingers on each hand.

To help digest its food, Yinlong used gastroliths. These are small stones that the dinosaur swallowed on purpose. The stones stayed in its belly to grind up tough plants. This is a trick many other dinosaurs and even modern birds use.

Scientists first found a very complete skeleton in 2004. This specimen included a nearly adult skull and many other bones. The fossils were found in the Shishugou Formation in Xinjiang Province. This area is in northwestern China. Researchers named the dinosaur in 2006. A team of experts from America and China worked together on this. They included scientists named Xu Xing, Catherine Forster, Jim Clark, and Mo Jinyou. They chose the name to honor a movie filmed nearby.

We know a lot about when Yinlong lived from the rocks. It lived during the Late Jurassic Period. Specifically, it lived during the Oxfordian stage. This was about 161.2 to 155.7 million years ago.

The scientists identified it as a ceratopsian using a small rostral bone. This bone sits at the end of the upper jaw. This small detail helps prove it is part of that family. Other fossils show it had unique features on its skull roof. These features link it to a larger group called Marginocephalia.

Learning about Yinlong helps us see how dinosaurs grew. Scientists studied the bones of many different ages. They looked at babies, young ones, and adults. They found that Yinlong reached sexual maturity at 6 years old. This means it was ready to have babies by that age. It grew faster than a crocodile. However, it grew slower than a bird or a mammal.

Studying these growth rates helps us understand the whole history of life.
