These fossils were located within the Kayenta Formation. Three skeletons were found arranged in a triangle. In 1954, Samuel P. Welles named the species Megalosaurus wetherilli. He named it to honor John Wetherill, an explorer and amateur archeologist. Later, in 1964, Welles found a larger adult skeleton in the same region. This discovery changed how scientists viewed the animal.

This discovery led to a major reclassification of the animal. Upon examining the 1964 specimen, Welles noticed the prominent skull crests.

He realized the animal did not belong to the genus Megalosaurus. In 1970, he assigned it to the new genus, Dilophosaurus. The crests were unexpected, and Welles compared the feeling to finding wings on a worm. Since then, more specimens have been identified. This includes an infant specimen, which is one of the earliest known infant theropods from North America. Researchers have also found fossil footprints and resting traces.
