S. W. Williston and Benjamin Mudge collected the first pieces in Colorado. Othniel Charles Marsh gave the dinosaur its name in 1878. He named it during the "Bone Wars." This was a time when scientists raced to find new fossils. Marsh chose the name because of the double-beamed bones in the tail. The name comes from Greek words meaning "double beam."

There are different types of Diplodocus with different sizes.

One type is Diplodocus carnegii. It can grow to 26 meters long and weigh about 12 to 15 metric tons. Another type is Diplodocus hallorum. This animal was even larger and could be the size of four elephants. Some estimates say it reached 35 to 40 meters in length. Its weight might have been as high as 80 to 100 metric tons. Scientists are still studying these fossils to find the exact numbers.

These fossils show many different shapes of scales. Some were rectangular, while others were round or dome-shaped. These scales were small, ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm. Some species might have had sharp spines made of keratin. Keratin is the same material found in your fingernails. These spines could be up to 30 cm long on the tail. They might have looked a bit like the spines on an iguana.

The neck was very long and contained at least 15 vertebrae. Interestingly, no skull has ever been found that definitely belongs to a *Diplodocus*. We only know their head shapes from closely related animals like *Galeamopus*. Their teeth were small and peg-like. These teeth were only found in the front sections of the jaws.

The tail of the *Diplodocus* was perhaps its most remarkable feature. It made up approximately 55% of the animal's total body length. The tail consisted of about 80 caudal vertebrae. This is nearly double the number of tail bones found in some other sauropods.

Othniel Charles Marsh named the genus in 1878. He was racing against Edward Drinker Cope to discover new species. Marsh named it *Diplodocus longus*, which means "long double-beam." Although the original type specimen was very incomplete, it remains the official name for the species. This discovery helped change how scientists understood dinosaur biology.

Fossilized impressions show a wide variety of scale shapes. These include rectangular, ovoid, dome, and even globular shapes. The scales ranged in size from 1 mm to 10 mm. Some scales looked like the rows seen on modern crocodilians. Some species may have also had keratinous spines. These were pointed structures made of the same material as fingernails. They could be up to 30 cm long on the tail. These spines might have looked similar to the scales on an iguana.
