It lived in North America during the Late Jurassic period. These animals were long-necked and walked on four sturdy legs. Their bodies were held in a mostly flat way. This posture was similar to a cantilever bridge.

One type, Diplodocus carnegii, was very long. It could reach 26 meters in length.

Their tails were also very long. The tail made up about 55% of their whole body. It had about 80 vertebrae, which are the bones in a spine. This long tail might have worked like a whip. It may have made noise or helped the animal defend itself. The tail also helped balance the long neck.

Middle parts of the tail had special bones. These are called chevron bones. They look like double beams on the underside of the tail. These bones helped support the tail. They might have kept blood vessels from being crushed.

Some Diplodocus had sharp spines on their skin. These spines were made of keratin, the same stuff in your nails.
