Christian mission is the belief that all followers should share the Christian gospel with the whole world. This idea comes from the Great Commission found in the book of Matthew.

A mission can be an organized effort to spread the faith. It can also be a specific place set up for this work. Many people go on mission trips to help others. Some trips are short, while others are long-term. Some people choose to spend their entire lives doing mission work.

Missionaries do more than just preach religious ideas. They often provide humanitarian aid and services to those in need. Some missions follow a "Doctrine of Love." This means they provide help without requiring people to change their religion.

Missionaries might also perform sacraments. They can work as part of a team or go alone. These workers often cross large geographical boundaries to reach new people. Their work can include teaching or providing medical care.

The history of these efforts goes back to the very beginning of the faith. Early figures like the Apostle Paul helped the message reach Greek and Roman cultures.

Other important people include Barnabas and Philip. Philip spread the faith to Samaria through preaching and miracles. Thomas is said to have traveled to India to start communities there. In the Middle Ages, monks in monasteries supported missions through research and libraries. St. Patrick was active in Ireland during the 5th century. St. David worked in Wales during that same time.

As time passed, many different groups organized large mission efforts. During the Age of Discovery, Spain and Portugal sent many missions to the Americas and Asia.

The Jesuits were a very active group founded in 1540. They sent missionaries to China and India. In the 15th century, missionaries reached the Kingdom of Kongo in West Africa. King João I of Kongo converted to Christianity in 1491. Later, the Baptist Missionary Society was founded in England in 1792. William Carey became its first missionary and traveled to Calcutta in 1793.

Mission work has changed how people interact with different cultures. In North America, some missionaries learned the languages of Native Americans. They even created new writing systems for languages like Quechua and Nahuatl.

This helped them communicate with the people they met. However, these interactions were not always easy or peaceful. Some missions were tied to the growth of strong empires. Other efforts, like those of Matteo Ricci in China, focused on peaceful ways to share ideas. Today, mission work remains a major part of many Christian traditions.
