Christian mission refers to the conviction that all believers are called to spread the Christian gospel globally. This drive is often linked to the Great Commission. This mandate is found in the Gospel of Matthew, specifically in verses 28:16-20. A mission can be an organized effort to carry out evangelism. It can also describe a specific location established for this purpose. Missionaries are individuals who cross boundaries to share their faith. These boundaries are most often geographical in nature.

Missionary work involves several distinct methods and structures. Individuals may work alone, or they may join mission teams. These teams often undertake mission trips to reach specific populations. There are different types of these trips. Some are short-term, while others are long-term. Some trips are relational in nature. Others focus simply on helping people in need. Some individuals choose to dedicate their entire lives to this work. Missionaries may preach the faith and administer sacraments. They also frequently provide humanitarian aid or essential services. Many missions follow a "Doctrine of Love." This belief allows them to provide aid without requiring religious conversion.

The history of Christian mission began within Second Temple Judaism. This early period followed the Great Commission and the Dispersion of the Apostles. A major turning point occurred regarding whether the mission should expand to non-Jewish people. This issue was discussed at the Council of Jerusalem around 50 AD. The Apostle Paul became a major proponent of reaching the "Gentiles." He contextualized the Christian message for Greek and Roman cultures. This allowed the faith to grow beyond its Hebrew roots. Other early figures played vital roles in this expansion. Barnabas supported Paul during his early missionary journeys. Philip spread the faith to Samaria through preaching and miracles.

Many specific historical figures helped establish global Christian communities. The Apostle Thomas is traditionally believed to have traveled to India. This helped establish influential communities in South India. Apollos was a skilled speaker from Alexandria. He strengthened believers in places like Ephesus and Corinth. The Coptic Church in Alexandria became a major center of activity. It influenced regions as far as Switzerland, Abyssinia, and Ireland. During Late Antiquity, religious orders became central to missionary work. Monasteries supported missions through research and libraries. They viewed this work as a way to reduce human suffering. Nestorian communities evangelized in Central Asia, Tibet, China, and India.

During the Middle Ages, missions expanded beyond the old Roman Empire. St. Patrick evangelized Ireland in the 5th century. St. David was active in Wales during the same era. In the 7th century, Gregory the Great sent missionaries like Augustine of Canterbury into England. By the 8th century, English Christians like Saint Boniface spread the faith into Germany. The Hiberno-Scottish mission began in 563. This eventually sparked the Anglo-Saxon mission in Francia. In the 14th century, Franciscans like William of Rubruck traveled to the Far East. They attempted to reach the Mongols and the Great Khans. In West Africa, the Kingdom of Kongo became Christian after King João I converted in 1491.

The Age of Discovery brought significant changes to mission work. Spain and Portugal established many missions in American and Asian colonies. The Jesuits, founded in 1540, were among the most active orders. Some missions were associated with imperialism and oppression. Others, like Matteo Ricci's mission to China, focused on peaceful inculturation. In 1541, Jesuits arrived in India. By 1552, they were being sent to China. The Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 divided the world into spheres of influence for Spain and Portugal. This linked missionary work to colonial policy. In the Netherlands, the Catholic Church was suppressed from 1592 to 1853. During this time, congregations were called "stations" or "staties."

Protestantism introduced new missionary patterns after the Reformation. Early Protestant churches initially focused on spreading their faith within Christian lands. Eventually, they began sending missionaries to previously unreached people. In North America, Jonathan Edwards became a missionary to the Housatonic Native Americans in 1751. He advocated for them against cultural imperialism. In the 19th century, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions was chartered in 1812. The Moravian Church also began sending missionaries in 1732. In the Methodist tradition, Thomas Coke is known as the "Father of Methodist Missions." He worked to increase support for missionary workers.

The Baptist movement also developed strong global missionary organizations. In 1792, twelve ministers founded the Baptist Missionary Society in England. William Carey became its first missionary. He traveled to Calcutta in 1793. Carey used geographic and ethnographic data to map unreached populations. His work is often called the foundation of modern missions. Throughout history, missionaries have interacted deeply with local cultures. Some learned indigenous languages like Quechua, Guarani, and Nahuatl. They even created new writing systems for these languages. These efforts have shaped the religious and cultural landscape of the entire world.
